WU MEETS DUB!!!

Frank Radio and iHipHop Distribution are proud to announce the highly anticipated follow-up to 2005’s “Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 1″
On November 10th, the newest and freshest sounds in underground electronic music encounter the grimiest and most hardcore hip-hop click in this one-of-a-kind album: “Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 2: Enter The Dubstep.”

As Vol. 1 sought to introduce hip-hop fans in general, and specifically, the famously large, loyal and diverse fan-base of the Wu-Tang to the burgeoning world of underground hip-hop, so Vol. 2 seeks to expose another untapped resource of underground talent, skill and artistry to this very same avid and intrepid fan-base.

The project serves a double purpose as well: many of the pioneers and practitioners (DJ’s and producers) in the Dubstep world came up in a time when Wu-Tang ruled the international airwaves. Unlike much commercial hip-hop, the immediacy of Wu-Tang’s sound spoke to many outside of the scope of the typical hip-hop fan, across oceans and at home. Their music and style helped to shape an emerging artform that hadn’t yet defined itself. Now, in 2009, as dubstep continues to grow, expand and encompass more styles and subgenres, the Wu-Tang sound is reintroduced into the mix, to spawn a new and unique musical crossbreeding, that is greater than the sum of its constituent parts.

This groundbreaking album is trail-blazing the collaboration between Dubstep and Hip-Hop, with stomach-pounding, bass-thumping guttural beats, and gully, gritty and grimy lyrics that break into the next decade in the chapters of each respective genre’s history. With Scuba, Parson, Trillbass, Dakimh, DZ, Rogue Star, Stenchman, Datsik & many more producing not remixes, but complex re-interpollations that include a veritable goldmine of Wu-Tang verses from the vaults that feature Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, RZA, GZA, Method Man, U-God & Masta Killa, Wu affiliates Killah Priest, Bronze Nazareth, Prodigal Sunn, Solomon Childs, Son One & more, and guest spots from Busta Rhymes, MF Doom, Pimp C, Three 6 Mafia, Ras Kass, Vast Aire, Canibus, Lord Jamar & many more, this one of a kind compilation is at the forefront of an emerging cultural and musical blend that is taking place on the margins of the mainstream, but will be talked about for years to come…

A / “Deep Space” Featuring RZA & Lord Jamar (Jay Da Flex & Yoof Remix)

B / “Love Don’t Cost (A Thing) / Still Grimey” FeaturingaZf Icewater, Method Man, U-God & Prodigal Sunn (Nebulla & Dore Remixes)

GOT POWER???

"There is enough energy in high altitude winds to power civilization 100 times over; and sooner or later, we're going to learn to tap into the power of winds and use it to run civilization." Says Ken Caldeira, Professor of Global Ecology at the Carnegie Institution for Science. (Discovery Channel, Project Earth, Infinite Winds episode)

Magenn Power's high altitude wind turbine called MARS is a Wind Power Anywhere™ solution with distinct advantages over existing Conventional Wind Turbines and Diesel Generating Systems including: global deployment, lower costs, better operational performance, and greater environmental advantages.

MARS is a lighter-than-air tethered wind turbine that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, generating electrical energy. This electrical energy is transferred down the 1000-foot tether for immediate use, or to a set of batteries for later use, or to the power grid. Helium sustains MARS and allows it to ascend to a higher altitude than traditional wind turbines. MARS captures the energy available in the 600 to 1000-foot low level and nocturnal jet streams that exist almost everywhere. MARS rotation also generates the "Magnus effect" which provides additional lift, keeps the MARS stabilized, and positions it within a very controlled and restricted location to adhere to FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) & Transport Canada guidelines.

Rest In Peace - Les Paul

Les Paul (June 9, 1915 - August 13, 2009)

The name Les Paul is synonymous with the electric guitar. As a player, inventor and recording artist, Paul has been an innovator his entire life. Born Lester William Polfus in 1915 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Paul built his first crystal radio at age nine - which was about the time he first picked up a guitar. By age 13 he was performing semi-professionally as a country-music guitarist and working diligently on sound-related inventions. In 1941, Paul built his first solid-body electric guitar, and he continued to make refinements to his prototype throughout the decade. It’s safe to say that rock and roll as we know it would not exist without his invention.

But Les Paul didn’t stop there. He also refined the technology of sound recording, developing revolutionary engineering techniques such as close miking, echo delay, overdubbing and multitracking. He also busied himself as a versatile bandleader and performer who could play jazz, country and pop.

The guitar that bears his name – the Gibson Les Paul – is his crowning achievement. It grew out of his desire, as a musician and inventor, to create a stringed instrument that could make electronic sound without distorting. What he came up with, after almost a decade of work, was a solid bodied instrument – that is, one that didn’t have the deep, resonant chamber of an acoustic guitar.

As he told writer Jim O’Donnell, “What I wanted to do is not have two things vibrating. I wanted the string to vibrate and nothing else. I wanted the guitar to sustain longer than an acoustical box and have different sounds than an acoustical box.” The fact that the guitar’s body was solid allowed for the sound of a plucked string to sustain, as its vibrating energy was not dissipated in a reverberant acoustic chamber.

He experimented with different designs until he had his non-vibrating guitar body, which he called “The Log.” Gibson Guitars initially turned him down, calling his invention “a broomstick with pickups” and pointing out that this meant guitarists would now have to carry around two instruments – one electric and one acoustic – which they viewed as prohibitively inconvenient. As a result, Paul was beaten to the marketplace by Leo Fender, whose Fender Broadcaster – the first mass-produced solidbody electric guitar – was introduced in 1948. That same year, however, Paul unveiled overdubbing, a breakthrough recording technique that would forever change music. Capitol Records released the Paul’s experimental eight-track recordings of “Lover (When You’re Near Me)” and “Brazil,” which he’d made in his garage workshop.

Paul’s career as a musician nearly came to an end in 1948, when he suffered near-fatal car accident in Oklahoma, skidding off a bridge into a river during a snowstorm. The guitarist shattered his right arm and elbow, and he also broke his back, ribs, nose and collarbone. He managed to salvage his career as a musician by instructing surgeons to set his arm at an angle that would allow him to cradle and pick the guitar. It took him a year and a half to recover.

Paul subsequently made his mark as a jazz-pop musician extraordinaire, recording as a duo with his wife, singer Mary Ford (who was born Colleen Summers). Their biggest hits included “How High the Moon” (1951) and “Vaya Con Dios” (1953), both reaching #1. The recordings of Les Paul and Mary Ford are noteworthy for Paul’s pioneering use of overdubbing - i.e., layering guitar parts one atop another, a technique also referred to as multitracking or “sound on sound” recording. He also speeded up the sound of his guitar. The results were bright, bubbly and a little otherworldly - just the sort of music you might expect from an inventor with an ear for the future.

In 1952, Les Paul introduced the first eight-track tape recorder (designed by Paul and marketed by Ampex) and, more significantly for the future of rock and roll, finally saw the release of the the gold-top solid body electric guitar that bears his name. Gibson’s Les Paul Standard went on to become one of the most popular of all models of electric guitar. Built and marketed by Gibson, with continuous advances and refinements from Paul in such areas as low-impedance pickup technology, the Les Paul is a staple instrument among many of rock’s greatest guitarists. He introduced the latest model in 2008. According to Gibson U.S.A., its design amendments include “a new asymmetrical neck profile that makes it one of the most comfortable and playable necks ever offered on any guitar.”

The list of musicians associated with the Gibson Les Paul include Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton,, Duane Allman, Mike Bloomfield, Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Page. Paul is guitarist Steve Miller’s godfather. Jimi Hendrix consulted him about the construction of Electric Lady Studios. In a British periodical, Led Zeppelin’s Page once wrote of Paul, “He’s the man who started everything. He’s just a genius.” While sharing a stage with Paul, Eddie Van Halen once told him, “Without the things you’ve done, I wouldn’t be able to do half the things I do.”

Over the ensuing decades Les Paul has remained active on all fronts. He recorded a Grammy-winning album of instrumental duets with Chet Atkins, Chester and Lester, in 1977. From the mid-Eighties through the mid-Nineties, he performed weekly at Fat Tuesday’s, a New York City jazz club. In 2005, at the age of 90, he released American Made/World Played, which featured guest spots from several of his most illustrious rock and roll disciples and won him a pair of Grammys.

Paul performed weekly – at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club – and indulged his inventor’s curiosity in a basement workshop at home in Mahwah, New Jersey up until his death on August 13, 2009.

Cybraphon

Cybraphon Demo Song from Cybraphon on Vimeo.

(WIRED) -- Like an aspiring indie band, the Cybraphon has many instruments, plays them on an irregular schedule, likes to have an audience around it -- and obsesses over comments on its blog, the number of friends it has on Facebook and how many fans follow it on MySpace.
The Cybraphon plays music based on how well its blog and social networking pages are doing.

The Cybraphon plays music based on how well its blog and social networking pages are doing.

The difference is that it is a handcrafted musical robot and one whose emotion meter swings from delirium to desolation based on its online popularity at any given moment.

"The Cybraphon has an almost egotistical desire for fame," says Simon Kirby, one of the creators of the robot.

When the needle hits rapture, the Cybraphon's built-in orchestra of mechanized acoustic instruments clang in harmony to belt out an upbeat tune. But without online attention it slips into dejection and spews out a sad melody.

Three U.K. based artists -- Kirby, Ziggy Campbell and Tommy Pheron -- built the robot over eight months using a £5,000 grant. It's a mechanical marvel that stuns with its attention to detail and construction. An antique wardrobe houses more than 60 robotic components including musical instruments such as cymbals and an organ as well as electronic parts including a PC and a controller. Kirby and his colleagues first created a sketch of what they wanted and then sourced the parts from antique stores, junk shops and donations.

The Cybraphon's emotions are accessible via a Twitter feed but also appear on a on a 100 year-old galvanometer housed in the wardrobe (pictured above).

Kirby says the Cybraphon is devised as a "tongue-in-cheek comment on people's obsession with online celebrity." And it is almost Julia Allison-esque in its quest for attention. The device scours the web all day looking for mentions of itself and tracking how many friends it has on Facebook and MySpace.

"It is happy when it feels its popularity increases but is miserable if it is being ignored," says Kirby.

The musical instruments inside the wardrobe include an Indian classical instrument called a Shruti box, an organ and cymbals. But they had to be tweaked to play on their own. The team attached a motor-driven crank to the drives of the Shruti box and modified it with 13 robotic servos. The organ was retro-fitted with robotic keys while a fan pumps air through it. Cybraphon includes 12 chimes that are struck by suspended solenoids and percussion instruments that are hit by beaters attached to motors. A custom made vinyl record is cued to play through antique brass gramophone horns.

The Cybraphon also has infra-red based motion detectors to sense when there are people around it. It then comes alive, playing the music that is driven by its current mood.

"The Cybraphon is switched on all the time but it really wakes up when someone walks up to it," says Kirby.

The brain of the system is a Macbook Pro notebook hidden inside one of the drawers of the wardrobe. "That, a few Arduino boards and lots of wire," says Kirby.

The computer runs software written in Python and MAX/MSP to monitor the web and update Cybraphon's emotions according to its rate at which its popularity is changing. "The software takes email alerts from Facebook, Google and so on, processes them and compares the current activity to that in the last 24 or 48 hours to calculate the rate of change," explains Kirby.

But no matter how much attention the Cybraphon gets, it always eventually slips into depression, says Kirby. That means online attention could cheer up the Cybraphon in the short term but once the initial excitement dies down, the robot is disillusioned. "We modeled it on an insecure, egotistical band," he says.

Though the Cybraphon's current mood is accessible via Twitter, and you can follow it on Facebook or MySpace, its music is not available online. However, you can watch a demo video of it here.

"A streaming feed, although perhaps a nice idea, is possibly too literal," says Ziggy Campbell, one of the creators of the Cybraphon. "Regular bands don't stream live performances all day long and neither does Cybraphon. It keeps things more exclusive."

The Cybraphon will be shown at the Inspace gallery in Edinburgh during the Edinburgh Art Festival in August.

Campbell says the Cybraphon's continued existence amuses him.

"Bands by their very nature tend to be volatile and prone to implosion," he says. "I'm surprised that the Cybraphon, a highly neurotic beast with some questionable electrical wiring, hasn't hit self destruct yet."

The Piri Reis Map Mystery . . . WTF?!?!

The Piri Reis map is a famous pre-modern world map compiled in 1513 from military intelligence by the Ottoman-Turkish admiral and cartographer Piri Reis. The half of the map which survives shows the western coasts of Europe and North Africa and the coast of Brazil with reasonable accuracy. Various Atlantic islands including the Azores and Canary Islands are depicted, as is the mythical island of Antillia and possibly Japan. The map has been used to claim an ancient knowledge of an ice-free Antarctica, transmitted either from extra-terrestrials or an Ice Age civilization . . . Yea - you think he / they had some help??? But who has the seismic technology at this time to be able to see thru a mile thick sheet of ice to be able to map Antartica? Or as some say, the only way to map this area with such longitudinal and latitudinal precision is thru aerial surveillance . . . HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

R.I.P Michael Jackson . . .

Michael Jackson, the record-breaking, sensationally gifted "King of Pop" who emerged from childhood superstardom to become the entertainment world's most influential singer and dancer, and the tabloid world's most disturbing celebrity, has died. He was 50.

A person with knowledge of the situation says Jackson died Thursday in a Los Angeles hospital. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.

His death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

Greenleaf Selekta AKA Clownstep KiLLa . . .

Next up on the blog is one of the coolest cats I know holding it down in the NOLA . . . I first met Green @ the Audobahn Hotel (I think that was the name of it) as Kaneda & myself rolled down to represent some OTB dnb flavor . . . Straight hospitality and kickin it like we'd known each other for a grip, these are just a couple of memories I have of that nite LOL . . . but for what it's worth, he and the BCL crew haven't given up holding it down with integrity ever since . . . Here's a lil bit bout this dude . . .

His DJ career began shortly after hearing Jungle for the first time in 1995. With guidance from the legendary Kise, he began to pursue my tastes in Drum & Bass.
Arround 96, he hooked up with Beebe, and they began playing records together on a regular basis. The combination has since become a staple of the New Orleans scene. Beebe's influence on him has been equally as important as Kise's was when he first started. Beebe's tastes have always differed from his slightly, so Beebe always has really good tunes that Green doesn't. Beebe's also one of the main reasons he's still playing today.

Right around 99, he was asked to join Outerbass longside Rekanize, Resin, & Beebe. This was a seminal time in his development as a DJ. Mondays at Cafe Roma will always have a special place in his heart. After Outerbass disolved in 2002, he went on "hiatus" for a year, but he and Beebe always stayed on top of the music. 2004 rolled around, and they decided along with Simian, Rekanize, & Resin to start up a new D&B weekly. It was at this juncture that BelowCLevel was formed.

Focusing on only the finest that Jungle has to offer, BelowCLevel began to showcase top producers from around the globe in The Crescent City. It was also in 2004 that they began to broadcast the BelowCLevel Show live on Jungletrain.net. Jungletrain opened up so many doors for them and they've made some really great connections because of that station. Another site that has been paramount in shaping his sound over the last 5 years has been SubvertCentral.com. This website has afforded him numerous friends, contacts, information, and tunes, as well as jokes galore.

All these things over the years have made him the Grumpy Bastard Junglist that he is today. He lives for breaks and bass. It is his everything, An Amen is his heartbeat.

Massive ups to Beebe, Russ, Mike, Ezra, Charlie T, Donovan, & Frazier. Y'all are my crew and my family. Also special shouts to Frank, Roxy, Steve LaVie, Third Sequence, Rules of Culture, Gravity A & Kryptic Soul System. Big ups all Louisiana Massive, you guys fucking rule! Massive respect to all Junglists worldwide working to move the sound forward. Boh!

If ya'll need to get @ ya man Green (which you do!!!) hit him up @ his myspace page or BelowCLevel's myspace page . . . EZ

Dead P.A. - Papa Zero & Son of a Blitch . . .

DEAD P.A. is changing the rules of dancefloor events. After cutting their teeth in the fourth largest U.S. city of Houston, Texas with an unusual dynamic interaction of live percussion, guitar, keyboards, vocals and programmable audio, the act quickly obtained a monthly residence at a swanky downtown club and has set fire everywhere since with their unique brand of "Drum N Breaks." While DJs are known for bringing music to the party, DEAD P.A. is bringing back the party to music. An emphasis on bad ass music, blistering performance, and theme oriented sets (rather than standing behind gear and pumping a fist once in a while) has generated comparison to a concert atmosphere and has consistently won over even the "cliquiest" of music-lovers. An adrenalin fueled exchange with audiences has kept DEAD P.A. in demand from Miami to Los Angeles and everywhere inbetween.

Core members of DEAD P.A. include George "The Human Drum Machine" Blitch and Jason Walsh AKA "Papa Zero" while frequent collaborative and performance duties are supplied by soulful songbird Krystal Hardwick and the Los Angeles based producer and MC Levon Louis.

2007 kicked off a little rough as Jason was diagnosed with a brain tumor the size of a small orange… but when life hands out small oranges, we’ve learned to make orange-ade. In spite of this setback, DEAD P.A. has released the full length cd (distributed to retail thru LOAD Media UK) “The Dead Will Rise,” a split 12" with Miami, Florida's Devine & Emily Play, headlined the Guitar Hero 3 stage at SXSW, and wrapped up 2008 with the "DEAD P.A. for President Tour." DEAD P.A. is accepting bookings for 2009!

These are some of the most entertaining cats in the drum n bass scene as of late - a breath of fresh air that was needed to add excitement in an otherwise stagnant culture . . . Check with anybody who has seen or worked with Dead P.A. and they'll have nothing but top notch things to say about their work ethic, as well as their integrity as artists . . . Kaneda / Janky Earl / Pernell / Street Kreditz / DoS1

About 32 years ago, there was an earthquake in downtown Los Angeles that rocked the entire city... 30 seconds later Mrs Q. gave birth to a the rudebwoy you all know as Kaneda. Coincidence? Maybe. It wasnt until Kaneda was 14 that he realized that Music would be a major part of his life. All aspects of his life became engulfed by music, including his father (longtime musician, songwriter). When Kaneda was 16, his father gave him his first Roland 909, synthesizer, and Fostex 4 track recorder. Day after day, Kaneda and his brothers (Money Gripp & Jack Frost), would write and produce hip hop tracks for themselves and other young rappers in Reseda, California, which led to their first tune (“Roll With Me”) to gain Radio airplay.

After moving back to Louisiana once again, Kaneda became involved in Ragga-jungle production and Djing when he met Dinah. Together they formed Enlightened Operatives in 97 and later formed RJS Crew. They could be seen all over Louisiana spinning nuthin but the hardest Jungle Drum n Bass Sounds in the state. It wasn’t until Kaneda started to get his own tracks cut to dub with the help of N8 Loc of N20 that he saw himself as a prominent force in the jungle scene.

The bond between Dinah and Kaneda soon vanished, and things took a change for the better. Kaneda hooked up with long time friend Fi3ld and things started coming together. They formed the OTB Crew (Out Tha Box), and joined forces with DJ Hans, Indo, Kid Klymaxx, 360, Jahli, E-plat, DJ Classic and a gang of other amazing DJ’s, Producers, Emcee’s, and B-Boys, who proved to be one of the hardest crews in the south! Performing all over the southern states from Texas to Atlanta, OTB aka OTB Soundsystem became a driving force.

After graduating from college, Kaneda moved to Houston, TX where he continued to DJ/ Produce Jungle, Dub-Step & Hip Hop. After all these years for being in the scene, Kaneda continues to press forward and is currently working some new projects with Fi3Ld and some up and coming Houston Rappers.

Ya'll make sure and peep Kaneda's blog right chea and be on the lookout for that ruff n rugged sonic biznass comin from this dood in 09 & beyond!!!

Politics Explained . . .

FEUDALISM: You have two cows. Your lord takes some of the milk.

PURE SOCIALISM: You have two cows. The government takes them and puts them in a barn with everyone else's cows. You have to take care of all of the cows. The government gives you as much milk as you need.

BUREAUCRATIC SOCIALISM: You have two cows. The government takes them and put them in a barn with everyone else's cows. They are cared for by ex-chicken farmers. You have to take care of the chickens the government took from the chicken farmers. The government gives you as much milk and eggs as the regulations say you need.

FASCISM: You have two cows. The government takes both, hires you to take care of them and sells you the milk.

PURE COMMUNISM: You have two cows. Your neighbors help you take care of them, and you all share the milk.

RUSSIAN COMMUNISM: You have two cows. You have to take care of them, but the government takes all the milk.

CAMBODIAN COMMUNISM: You have two cows. The government takes both of them and shoots you.

DICTATORSHIP: You have two cows. The government takes both and drafts you.

PURE DEMOCRACY: You have two cows. Your neighbors decide who gets the milk.

REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY: You have two cows. Your neighbors pick someone to tell you who gets the milk.

BUREAUCRACY: You have two cows. At first the government regulates what you can feed them and when you can milk them. Then it pays you not to milk them. Then it takes both, shoots one, milks the other and pours the milk down the drain. Then it requires you to fill out forms accounting for the missing cows.

PURE ANARCHY: You have two cows. Either you sell the milk at a fair price or your neighbors try to take the cows and kill you.

LIBERTARIAN/ANARCHO-CAPITALISM: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull.

SURREALISM: You have two giraffes. The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.
